Birr Town and Castle
The architecturally delightful Georgian Heritage town is, in itself, well worth a visit. Birr Castle , its demesne and splendid gardens must not be missed. It includes the famous Rosse telescope for many years the largest in the world and science museum covering astronomy, engineering and agriculture.


Bunratty Castle
Irelands iconic Bunratty Castle is a must on your itinerary to Ireland.  Named after the river Raite which runs alongside this strategic battlement.  The spot on which this castle stands has been occupied for over 1000 years. www.bunrattycastle.ie

Glenstal Abbey

Glenstal Abbey
Glenstal is a Norman Revivalist Castle, with a Windsor-style round tower, all fronted with an impressive facade and Norman gate-house. The main building faces south, and commands an unbroken view of some thirty miles towards the Galtee Mountains. www.glenstal.com/abbey


This attractive village of Lorrha is on the site of a monastic settlement with remains of three ancient abbeys from c. 1,000AD and two even older high crosses. See also nearby village and harbour at Terryglass.

Leap Castle

Leap Castle,built in 1240 it acted as a look-out for the mighty O'Carroll clan. The scene of much murder and execution, it is now regarded as "the most haunted castle in Ireland".

Sightseeing - a little further afield

On the River Shannon and at the exact centre of Ireland, this 6th century ecclesiastical site has three high crosses, a cathedral, nine churches and two round towers.

The Burren and Cliffs of Moher
County Clare's main attractions make a great trip. The unique Burren with its rocky almost lunar landscape is world famous for its fauna and alpine flowers. The nearby Cliffs of Moher, stretching for 8kms, with 650ft high cliffs are Europe's best. There is a wonderful all weather visitors centre on site.
